Dear Candidate

Firstly, thank you for your interest in considering Cherwell District Council for the next step in your future career. We understand how important a first impression can be, so we hope our first impression fills you with excitement, possibility, and opportunity.

Cherwell District Council, set in the beautiful landscape of Oxfordshire serving a population of 150,503 across 227 square miles, with much of the district landscape being soft rolling hills with the northwest of the district lying at the northern extremity of the Cotswolds. But do not be misled by this serenity we have a complex mix of urban communities with high levels of deprivation that are often hidden from the wider world.

Cherwell is therefore a bold and ambitious Council on behalf of its local communities - with a strong track record of strategic programmes and initiatives that put us at the leading edge of delivery.

We have established four key strategic objectives and targeted priorities on behalf of our local communities.

Housing that meets your needs – delivering affordable housing, raising standards in rented housing, supporting our most vulnerable residents, and promoting innovative housing schemes.

Leading on environmental sustainabilityaiming to be carbon neutral by 2030, increase recycling, promoting the Green Economy, protecting our natural and environment and built heritage, improving air quality, and reducing environmental crime.

An enterprising economy with strong and vibrant local centressupporting local businesses, securing infrastructure to support growth, investing in our town centres, and promoting the district as a visitor economy.

Healthy, resilient, and engaged communitiesproviding opportunities to support active lifestyles, improving the quality of sport and leisure facilities, creating more inclusion for health and wellbeing, supporting community and cultural development, tackling causes of health inequality and deprivation, and working with partners to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

We have recently agreed to decouple our strategic partnership with Oxfordshire County Council which provides us with an exciting opportunity to refocus our commitment to working with our local communities. We intend to drive hard with and on behalf of our communities to shape our localities – to build on the good partnership activity embedded during the Covid pandemic and to support the economic recovery vital to the prosperity of our communities.

By making responsible choices now and putting ourselves on a sustainable footing, we can keep supporting the district’s recovery from COVID-19 and continue our work to make Cherwell a healthier and more prosperous place to live and work’.
